Frequently Asked Questions

A bookkeeper is key to keeping all of your business's finances organized. The primary duties of a bookkeeper are to categorize transactions, reconcile bank accounts, prepare key financial statements, and handle bills and invoices. The organization of these documents is necessary to begin your strategic analysis and budgeting.

When tax season rolls around, or you and your stakeholders are beginning to plan your yearly budget, you will need all of your financial information gathered and organized. A bookkeeper ensures everything is squared away and ready for your use — which leaves you free to run your business.

The sooner the better, but a bookkeeper can be brought on board at any time of the year. If you are preparing for tax season, you should ideally hire a bookkeeper by October so they have plenty of time to pull together your financial documents.

An accountant views all of your financial information and identifies trends. A bookkeeper categorizes and organizes those documents for that exact use. An accountant is not expected to do the categorizing — and with a bookkeeper handling that work, your accountant can accurately do the job you hire them for.

You do not need a bookkeeper year-round, but it is recommended. There are many tasks a bookkeeper can assist your business with throughout the year. Additionally, having a bookkeeper year-round means they have the opportunity to grow with your business.
